BORIS LAUNCHES ENERGY EFFICIENCY PLAN
(Published 11 August 2011)
The Mayor of London Boris Johnson has boosted his RE:NEW energy programme by offering 55,000 free energy efficiency make-overs to homes across the city.
The scheme, which is targeted at improving 200,000 homes by 2012 through measures such as low-energy light bulbs, cavity wall and loft insulation, has only helped around 9000 homes to date.
The homes that have already taken part in the scheme have saved up to £154 on annual energy and water bills and nearly 3500 tons of CO2.
But with new funding of £5.9 million, the scheme now plans to help homes in four London boroughs to kick start activities.
Homes in Barking and Dagenham, Hackney, Lewisham and Waltham Forest will receive a tailor-made package of energy efficiency advice on measures such as low-energy light bulbs, radiator panels and stand-by switches, as well as ways of saving water, between now and May 2012.
More substantial measures like loft and cavity wall insulation will also be on offer.
