GREEN DREAM FOR TENANTS

(Published 19 August 2011)

The Government has launched a new £3 million scheme that could see tenants get solar panels for heating water and eco-friendly boilers that will help cut fuel bills.

The scheme, which is targeted at improving 200,000 homes by 2012 through measures such as low-energy light bulbs, cavity wall and loft insulation, has only helped around 9000 homes to date.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) said local authorities and housing associations could bid for a share of the money, which is part of the £15 million "premium payment" fund that aims to boost uptake of renewable heat technology.

It is hoped the technologies, which include solar hot water panels, biomass boilers and heat pumps which use warmth from the air or ground to heat houses, will prove more efficient than old heating systems and protect families from the volatile costs of fossil fuels.
