UK FACING COLD WEATHER IN JANUARY

(Published 23 December 2010)

After one of the coldest Decembers on record, Met Office officials have warned that the ‘big freeze’ could extend into late January.

Predicting widespread and severe frost, patchy heavy snow showers and Arctic winds over the next few weeks, the UK's official weather forecaster expects heating demand to be well above seasonal norms.

Britain often escapes the extreme winter cold of continental Europe, thanks to south westerly Atlantic winds that bring wet but mild weather.

But Arctic winds expected to come from the north and easterly winds from Russia, mean that there is unlikely to be any relief from the winter freeze for some time.
