CARBON EMISSIONS SET TO RISE BY 25% IN 20 YEARS, REPORT SAYS
(Published 21 January 2011)
ExxonMobil, the world’s largest oil company, expects global carbon emissions to rise by an alarming 25% over the next 20 years.
In its annual Outlook for Energy report, ExxonMobil suggests that a 40% higher demand for energy will lift carbon emissions by around 0.9% a year until at least 2030.
"It is a significant rise [in emissions], but it is substantially slower because of [expected] improved efficiency and a shift towards lower carbon fuels," says the report, previewed at the World Future Energy conference in Abu Dhabi.
The report goes on to suggest that there will be a need for a more “aggressive approach” in moving towards less carbon intensive fuels if runaway climate change is to be arrested.
