FREEZING WEATHER WON’T BE A ONE OFF SAY SCIENTISTS

(Published 27 January 2011)

After shivering through some of the coldest weather on record, scientists have dealt another blow to homeowners, saying that freezing conditions could become the norm.

Researchers believe that the melting Arctic glaciers are causing large amounts of fresh water to be dumped into the sea, potentially altering the Gulf Stream that gives the UK its mild climate.

The warning came ahead of a UK expedition to find out how the Arctic Sea is changing. The Catlin Arctic Survey expedition will measure measuring temperature, salinity and flow of the fresh water just below the sea ice.

Simon Boxall of the National Oceanography Centre commented:

"The extension of the Gulf Stream that affects the climate here and around the world could weaken or change."
