LA NINA BLOWS ILL WIND FOR AUSSIES

(Published 4 January 2011)

Research by the Walker Institute at the University of Reading has linked the La Nina cold weather system that has been largely responsible for the harsh winter, to England’s performance in The Ashes.

According to research, the phenomenon begins in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Peru, cooling the water temperature by a few degrees and ultimately affecting the jet stream and the climate in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

La Nina is the colder sister of the better-known warm weather system, El Nino, and usually occurs the following year. Unsurprisingly, the Walker Institute study shows that when the cold weather from La Nina hits an Ashes series, England are much more likely to win.

The opposite is true in an El Nino year, with England only winning one series since 1907.

Expected to continue into early 2011, La Nina will bring even more cold weather to the UK.
