December 2010 was the coldest since records began, and early signs show that January could be just as severe.
The snow that caused widespread chaos last month is set to make an unwelcome return, with parts of Wales, the Midlands and East Anglia likely to see some snow in the coming days.
The Met Office has already started issuing weather warnings for areas of Scotland with more expected to follow.
As temperatures again plummet below freezing, the cost of heating will again be thrown into sharp focus with most families looking to cut back on expenditure after Christmas.
