MILLIONS CUTTING HEATING TO PAY RENT

(Published 20 January 2012)

A new study for a homeless charity suggests that millions of people are cutting back on heating or eating to help pay their mortgage or rent.

A YouGov survey for Shelter found a third of people had reduced spending on food to help make ends meet.

At the same time, one in five of the 4,000 polled said they were turning down the heating. That figure, 60% up on 2008, means the total number of people shivering could top 10 million.

Shelter Chief Executive Campbell Robb said: “These staggering findings show the tough choices facing families.

“Every two minutes, somebody in our nation faces the risk of losing their home.

“We strongly urge anyone struggling to pay their rent or mortgage to seek some advice as early as possible.”
