STRAW HOUSE BALE-OUT FOR COUNCIL
(Published 28 July 2011)
Lincolnshire’s North Kesteven District Council has used an unusual building material to construct energy efficient social housing in the tiny village of Martin.
Four three-bedroom semi-detached houses have been built out of bales of straw as part of an effort to save energy.
Each home uses 450 bales of straw at a cost of just £2 each and could see fuel bills that are just 20% of conventional homes, such are the material’s insulation properties.
Heated with a single wood-burning stove, this sustainable project is quickly catching on, with other councils planning to take on the idea and North Kesteven District Council looking to further invest in straw homes.
The houses themselves have been tested by wind gusts of up to 120mph, meaning that no amount of huffing and puffing will blow these houses down.
