SHOCKER FOR SCOTTISH POWER CUSTOMERS
(Published 9 June 2011)
Scottish Power has become the first energy supplier to significantly raise its prices.
Dealing a blow to the company’s 2.4 million customers, the move will see electric charges jump by 10% while gas will go up by 19%, meaning an increase of £200 for some households.
The Spanish-owned company, which made £1.15billion profit last year, blamed the move on rising wholesale energy costs, which have jumped 30% in the past year.
Raymond Jack, Scottish Power’s UK retail director, said:
“We understand times are difficult for many people and we have done what we can to absorb these additional costs for as long as possible.”
Once the price-hike comes into effect the average UK fuel bill will shoot up £187 to £1,398, leaving many facing yet another costly winter.
