GOVERNMENT SMART METER PLANS UNVEILED

(Published 31 March 2011)

The Government has announced plans to start rolling-out smart meters to domestic customers in early 2014 with the aim of every home in the country having one by 2019.

Energy secretary Chris Huhne commented that the devices would give energy users more control over how they use power in the home, helping them to save money on utility bills.

"In combination with our plans to reform the electricity market and introduce the Green Deal for home and businesses, the rollout of smart meters will help us keep the lights on while reducing emissions and getting the best possible deal for the consumer," he added.

However, action group Consumer Focus has called on the government to ensure people's data is safeguarded when energy meters are being rolled out and for energy suppliers "play fair".
