CASH INCENTIVES FOR HOUSEHOLDERS TO GO GREEN

(Published 24 November 2011)

Households will be offered a £150 cash incentive to improve the energy efficiency of their homes as part of the Green Deal, the government has revealed.

14million homes could be fitted with insulation and other energy saving measures under the scheme at no upfront cost, and householders have been told to expect lower energy bills within two years of the home improvements being made.

According to government estimates, the average household energy bill should be £94 or 7% less a year by 2020 as a result of government energy policies.

Measures are also set to be introduced to ensure smaller building firms can get involved in the Green Deal and that fuel poor homes can benefit from new energy efficient boilers and other improvements.

Under the Green Deal, householders will be able to borrow up to £10,000 over a 25-year period to fund the energy saving measures, which will be repaid through small additions to energy bills, which should be outweighed by the cost savings from using less energy.

The new measures were announced as part of a consultation on the Green Deal, which is due to be launched in October 2012.
