UK HOUSEHOLDS FACE A WINTER OF DISCONTENT

(Published 28 October 2010)

According to online research, over six out of 10 households are worried about the cost of their heating, with over a fifth of consumers already struggling to pay their energy bills.

The survey, published by online price comparison website uSwitch.com, suggested that the high cost of energy alongside last years ‘Big Freeze’ has left a lasting impression. Almost half (48%) of those polled have attempted to make their homes more energy efficient, with a further 24% claiming to have taken action due to the severity of last years winter.

Almost three quarters of people, which could equate to up to 19 million households nationwide, have already cut back on the energy that they use, or intend to do so as they attempt to take the sting out of their fuel bills. It is particularly startling that, if last years activity is taken into account, up to 17% of people can be expected to do without adequate heating throughout the winter because of cost.

By way of a solution, uSwitch advise that turning to an online plan and combining gas and electric with one provider could help save money, while Moneysupermarket.com advocated completing any switch before mid-December to reap the greatest rewards.
