WILL UK HOLIDAYS BOOST B&B REFURB BUSINESS?
(Published 1 October 2010)
Despite the wet weather last summer, UK residents seem to have continued the “holiday at home” trend that started as soon as the recession hit.
Visitors, whether from overseas or the UK will no longer put up with drafty, damp and cold bedrooms or leaky sinks and showers. That means more and more independent hotel and B&B owners will be renovating, upgrading and refurbishing this winter to keep in the race with the “budget chains”.
This could be a great opportunity for installers in tourist areas, whether at the coast or inland, as updating the heating system and putting in more individual room controls can help improve guest comfort and reduce the owner’s energy bills.
According to statistics from Visit Britain, the official body, in the year to May 2010, domestic overnight trips were up 8.4%. This follows on from 2009 when nearly 61 million holidays, of one night or more, were taken by UK residents in the UK with a further 18 million overnight business trips.
In bound tourism has fallen but in total nearly 30 million overseas visitors came to the UK in 2009.
But the competition is still tough and that means both price competition and more competition in terms of service and décor.
