HEATING GOES ON IN OCTOBER AS THE CHILL HITS

(Published 14 October 2010)

For most people, flicking the switch that turns on the central heating is the first sign that autumn is on its way out and winter is just around the corner.

According to a survey conducted by Confused.com, the majority of people turn on their heating for the first time in October, with only 27% of people holding out until November.

As the nights draw in, an average of 46% of people will enjoy a night in front of the television each evening rather than venture out, making heating a much more central part of everyday life.

The survey, which asked 2,000 people about their heating habits, also revealed that one in ten households admit to leaving their heating on all day, with nearly 2% doing so to keep their pets warm.

Data published by the Energy Saving Trust states that turning the thermostat down by just 1°C can cut heating bills by 10%, but, with the average homeowner turning the heating up to 22.6°C, heating bills could go through the roof this winter.
